The   Gordon Bennett Cup   was a race held annually from 1900 to 1905 in which only cars that had gone through all stages of production in a particular country were allowed to take part. Three vehicles per nation were permitted. Participating countries were Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the USA.

At the same time, complaints were being made that the bodies, which had previously been entirely grey, were difficult to distinguish, and so the national teams decided to design their cars in a uniform colour. The Americans initially chose red. This was disputed by the Italians in the 1920s and remains the national colour of Italy's bodies to this day. The American colour has since been white with two blue vertical stripes. Other colours were also subject to later changes: German makes initially competed in white, then in silver after 1934. The final colour scheme for Great Britain was green: in accordance with Irish "home law", the bodies were green.

When the Grand Prix and F1 were introduced in 1950, the colors applied to the corresponding racing cars. Prototypes and touring cars were also painted accordingly. At the end of the 1960s, when sponsors became more important, manufacturers urged the FIA to relax the national color code. Since then, the racing colors have only been semi-official, but are still recognized by the public and usually correctly assigned. Car manufacturers, especially Ferrari, also maintain the tradition and paint at least parts of their production in the racing colors.Helmet of the US national team at the International Six Day Race 2012. In contrast to the color on the vehicles, the US team uses blue helmets with white stripes.
