19S048CW Chronograph "1970 Leather"
“Chrono 1970”
« Why the Seventies are back in fashion in the watch industry! »
Many luxury watch lovers prefer models whose design is based on the design trends of certain previous decades or which take up the characteristic features of famous watch icons. Retro watches in the style of the 1970s are currently in great demand. Several manufacturers have now included corresponding models in their collections, some examples of which we present in this article.
Why the 1970s?
The reasons for choosing a watch in the style of the 1970s may vary greatly from individual to individual. But there are at least some clues as to why this era in particular is currently so popular with watch buyers. Firstly, the trend towards 1970s design not only affects the watch industry, but is flanked by corresponding parallels in fashion and product design in other industries. Secondly, the period from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s is often associated with a certain attitude to life that has not lost its fascination to this day and has many different manifestations. For some, it is the time of the hippie movement. For others, it is the time when mankind conquered space and when the age of digitalization began. In any case, it was a time that continues to have an impact in many ways up to the present day. Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time" is a prime example of this zeitgeist.
What characterizes the design of the 1970s?
In the watch industry, the seventies were primarily a time of extremely extravagant watch case and dial designs. Who doesn't know the Heuer Monaco, the Autavia, the Omega "Darth Vader?" All absolute design icons. Steve McQueen made this time, when men were still allowed to be men, famous and set the standard for all racing films in his film "Le Mans".
Our Constantin Weisz "Chrono 1970" focuses precisely on this era. A "TV screen" case shaped like the television screens of that time: large, extravagant and iconic, with an organic leather strap in keeping with the 70s style. The basis for the high-quality chronograph movement was the Venus 175 caliber, described by many watch experts as the most beautiful chronograph movement.
