Petit Pilot "AS 1958 - 24A991CW
One of the most successful watch genres of all is the pilot's watch. Its popularity stems from its distinctive design, which in turn stems from its rich history: As humans took to the skies, timepieces became indispensable instruments, and a distinct style emerged: the pilot's watch.
The days when every pilot needed a dedicated watch are over. Modern measuring instruments, and not least GPS, the global navigation satellite system for positioning and timekeeping, are now the necessary tools. What remains, however, is the typical look of a pilot's watch: With its classic design, this watch for pilots is a prized favorite in many a watch collection.
But back to the beginning:
At the beginning of the 20th century, Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont conducted numerous experiments with his self-built airplanes. He is said to have complained to his friend and jeweler Cartier that ordinary pocket watches were barely legible during a flight. Cartier then constructed the now-legendary Santos. The model went into production in 1911 and has been a staple of the watch collection ever since.
The AS 1958 is a mechanical movement from the Swiss manufacturer A. Schild (AS) , produced in the 1960s and 1970s, and features a rare quick-set date mechanism. This is operated by pressing the crown.
